Fanshawe student's clothing line caters to kids wearing medical devices

Kelly Scott started out just wanting to hone her sewing skills.

Kelly Scott started out just wanting to hone her sewing skills.

Three years later, the 56-year-old certified professional accountant has not improved her sewing, but developed a line of clothing for children who must wear medical equipment.

As her classmates in Fanshawe College's fashion design program celebrated their graduation with the annual Unbound fashion show April 21, Scott's creations were on display nearby.

"I always had a love of sewing and I wanted to get back to doing something for myself," said Scott.

"So, I went into the program because it had everything I needed. Unlike the younger students trying to build a career, I already had a career and I was just more interested in developing technical skills. I don't have the same drive as them to be on the leading edge of fashion."

Last summer, just before Scott was to start work on her final year that requires students develop a fashion line, a London family reached out to the college asking if they would research and develop a line of clothing for children who wear medical devices — such as IV lines, ostomy pouches, or feeding tubes — that not only looks good but is functional and gives caregivers ease of access to the devices.

"These devices all present real problems when you're clothing a child," said Scott.

"But how do you design something that won't lead to infections, or doesn't expose the child's body and is secure? These are some of the challenges we don't have to think about when we're getting dressed."

In her research, Scott touched base with Toronto designer Izzy Camilleri, who designed a line of inclusive clothing for people in wheelchairs. Camilleri may be best known for designing the late Gord Downie's costumes for his farewell tour with the Tragically Hip in 2016 after he was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer.

I wanted to show what's possible and inspire other designers.

"She has been such a tremendous inspiration to me," said Scott. "The quality of her work is what I aspire to. She has lovely designs that are really well thought through."

Among the innovative designs Scott implemented were the use of magnetic buttons, Velcro shoulders and sides, and the use of materials that are waterproof or wick away moisture.

Scott developed five dresses for girls between the ages of two and six, but acknowledges more research is needed for older children.

"I wanted to show what's possible and inspire other designers," said Scott. "A few changes can lead to inclusive clothing without turning your entire (fashion) line upside down. It's important because the parents and caregivers of these children and the children cope with more before breakfast than most people do in a month."
