Do I need to license a tow dolly in Colorado to be legal? I know Florida and California do not require licensing but not familiar with Colorado where I now live.

some states require licenses if you ever tow the dolly alone, but not if it always has a car on it, or so I have read here.

typically, if your home state does not require a plate, there is reciprocity, state to state. same with towing a boat behind a fifth wheel in other states.
that being said, if you do not have a car on the dolly, a plate is required, because then, it is just a trailer.
nobody said it had to make sense.

whoa, double towing is NOT reciprocal. at least not according to posts here.

bumpy, you may be right. i shouldnt have made a blanket statement.
i travel in a lot of midwestern and western states, and have seen it in most states, except those east of the missippi.
i never saw double towing till i moved to arizona. i have never heard of anyone getting stopped for it though.
even if it is legal, and im not saying it is always, it looks like an accident waiting to happen. as i said, no one said it had to make sense.

You should be legal there if you are legal in the state of your residence.

Most vehicle laws are reciprocity in nature, some states require both front an back license plates, but in those states where only a rear plate is required it is not unlawful to drive in a state where two are required.

I have a tow dolly and a tow truck. I tow flatbed trailors all the time in Colorado as I have lived here all my life. Colorado tried about 3 years ago to make it manditory to have a plate on a tow dolly but they couldn't get it passed because U-Haul would have lost millions. So no it isn't manditory to plate a tow dolly in Colorado because it is an extention of the towing vehicle.

I think your second statement would be more accurate saying, "Many vehicle laws are...." as there are some that are not, and double towing is one of them. also double towing of a pickup/fiver/boat may be legal in MN, but some other combination may not be.
